Roulette Casino Game >> The History of Roulette
One suggestion about its roulette’s history is that it has early origins from ancient China. It’s said that on their travels the Dominican monks brought the game to Europe after trading with the Chinese.
The actual word Roulette means “small wheel” in French, and France is where the game as we know and play it today originated from. A French man called Blaise Pascal is said to have invented the roulette wheel some time in the 17th century. Blaise Pascal was a man of many talents and was also a physicist, mathematician and philosopher.
Another idea is that is two French brothers, Francois and Louis Blanc invented roulette wheel. Part of the history of roulette is an old legend which tells of how Francois Blanc supposedly signed a contract with the devil to get the secrets of roulette. This legend is tied in to the fact that if you add up all of the numbers on a roulette wheel: 1 to 36 together the sum total is 666, which according to the Christian book of Revelation is the Number of the Beast, Satan himself.
At this point of roulette’s history it was illegal for people to gamble in France to the wheel made its way over the border in to Germany where it stayed for a short time. Gambling was then outlawed in Germany so the roulette wheel was on the move once again. This time the game was moved to Monte Carlo where Louis Blanc was the given the job of running the famous Monte Carlo Casino. From here on in the game quickly grew in popularity and became one of the casinos most played games.
Some time in the early 1800’s when casinos started to grow worldwide the game traveled across the Atlantic ocean to the USA. At this point the history of roulette was changed again. A second version of the game was born and the wheel was altered. The Americans added an extra Zero to the wheel to give the casino a slightly better extra advantage. Because of this today there are two main versions of roulette to play, one using an American wheel with 31 pockets and the other using a European Wheel with only 30 pockets. Both of these versions of the game offer the same fixed odds to the gamblers.
There is also a roulette game known as “In Prison” which is a variation of the European game, when a zero comes up in the game the player is allowed to choose between surrendering one half of outside bets they made or carry them forward to the next game.
